As guests began to arrive, the atmosphere was charged with anticipation and wonder, heightened by the presence of three actors draped in traditional Greek robes .

The highlight, however, was the Viky's (the bride) grand entrance. Pulled by two white horses , she arrived in a cart, with the soft melodies of a string quartet playing in the background.

The sun, casting its golden rays through the temple's columns, illuminated the aisle adorned with white and burgundy flowers. It was a sight to behold.

At the altar Chris, her soon-to-be husband, awaited with 2 chalices filled with sand. A larger chalice, filled by the guests with their own sand, stood as a testament to the love and support they had poured into the couple's relationship.

Considering the inflation in the UK is up over 10%, we are looking at a price tag of least £ 33.000 for the 2023.

But let's compare that to the cost of getting married in Italy, shall we? It turns out that getting hitched in the boot-shaped country can be a more affordable affair. Get married in Italy 2023-24 as a UK Citizen - Documents Required

You are a British Citizen and want to get married in Italy in 2023-2024. Let's go through all the options!

Do not fear!

The process may seem long and difficult, with lots of papers in between, but I (wedding planner) will help you step by step to complete everything you need to make your dream of getting married in Sicily come true.

Getting married in Italy as a UK citizen is possible, provided you allow yourself at least 4 months to deal with all the legal bureaucracy, paperwork, and especially to secure the most sought after venues. British Nationals can get married in Italy, and the wedding will be valid in the UK. The different options are:

-Catholic Wedding

-Civil Ceremony

-Symbolic Wedding

The first 2 options require paperwork and planning. If you do not want to go through the hassle of the paperwork in Italy, you have the very popular option of a religious or symbolic wedding. Let me explain in details:

-Catholic Wedding

Catholic weddings in Italy are possible for British Nationals, but require due preparation, which consists of several documents and authorizations that are issued by the couple’s local priest, their Bishop and the local Bishop of the church where they will be getting married in Italy. This procedure requires at least 9-12 months of preparation. Be advised that not all Bishops in Italy will allow weddings of non-residents. We can assist you by guiding you through the complex procedure of a Catholic Wedding in Italy and by suggesting venues where the Bishop will raise no objections to your Catholic wedding in Italy.

-Civil Ceremony

Civil Ceremonies are legally binding and are typically performed in the local Town Hall by the mayor or another officer appointed to celebrate the wedding. The ceremony lasts about 20 minutes and must be conducted in Italian by law. If you, your spouse, or one or both of the witnesses do not speak Italian, you are legally required to have an interpreter present throughout the ceremony. You or your partner are not permitted to act as an interpreter. A professional interpreter must be present and sign an oath to translate the ceremony correctly.

5-steps guide to get all documents needed for British Citizens to get married in Italy - Civil Ceremonies

-STEP 1

If you live in the United Kingdom, the first step is to obtain a certificate of no impediment, also known as a CNI, as well as a statutory declaration to prove your eligibility to marry. If your partner is British, they will also need a CNI and a statutory declaration. You can make an appointment at your local register office to give notice of your marriage and obtain a CNI.

PRO-TIP: Bring your passports, as the name on the CNI must be exactly the same as the one on the passport, or your documents might be rejected.

Your notice (banns of marriage) will be displayed in the registered office for 28 days. If no one objects, you can collect your CNI. To be valid in Italy, present your CNI to the municipality in Italy no later than six months after its issuance.

-STEP 2

While waiting for the Certificate of No Impediment, you should make a Statutory Declaration in the UK before a solicitor or public notary. The declaration is required by Italian authorities. Please do not sign or date the document until you have met with the solicitor/notary, and make sure that when you write your name, it is exactly as it appears on your passport, and if you have never been married, exactly as it appears on your birth certificate. For this service, the solicitor or public notary will charge a fee. Fees will vary, so it's worth shopping around and paying directly.

-STEP 3

After you have obtained both the certificate of no impediment and completed the Statutory Declaration, you send both documents to the FCO Legalisation Office in Milton Keynes (on line) to be legalised with a Hague Apostille. This will be charged by the Legalisation Office.

-STEP 4

After legalising both of these documents, you will need to have the Certificate of No Impediment translated. Because it will be used as an Italian legal document, it must be translated by an Italian official translator and sworn before Italian courts or an Italian Justice of the Peace. The Statutory Declaration does not need to be translated because it is already in both languages,.

-STEP 5

When all of these documents are completed, they should be delivered to the Town Hall where the couple will be married. Please keep in mind that in some parts of Italy, the Town Hall may request the wedding couple sign the Declaration of Marriage at least two or three days before the wedding. Following the ceremony, the Italian Town Hall (Comune) will issue the couple a multilingual marriage certificate.

Symbolic Ceremony

Luckily, there is a 3rd option which is a life-saver for many couples: a symbolic ceremony. A symbolic ceremony (which might or might not be religious), is a ceremony that is NOT legally valid, but that plays out just like a genuine marriage service. 1. CASTELLO TAFURI - NOTO

This beautiful renovated castle is built on a cliff overlooking the stunning coast of Portopalo, in the southern tip of Sicily.

From its beautiful terraces you can see where the two seas meet: The Ionian sea and the Mediterranean sea.

2. LA PLAGE RESORT - TAORMINA

What makes this location truly unique is its luxury style suites, panoramic seafront gardens, beach access and its location just opposite the romantic "Isola Bella".

3. VILLA HAMALIA - MESSINA

Built in the 1900's, this Sicilian Villa blends the sea and the sky, with breathtaking views of the Messina's channel. It is located on the side of a hill that hosts plenty of lemon trees. It features a panoramic garden and an infinity pool, where you and your guests will be delighted by the gentle breeze and the dreamy view of the Messina Channel.

4. CASTELLO DI NELSON - BRONTE (CATANIA)

Built around the XII century, it was the home of kings, queens and Popes, until in 1799 it was donated by King Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies to the English admiral Horatio Nelson. It later became a museum. It has lush gardens, stone courtyards and a beautiful church.

It is located in Maniace, near Bronte ( the famous pistachio city ) and on the way you can admire thousands of pistachio trees!

5. AFROBAR - CATANIA

A very famous beach club located on the shore of Catania. It is usually a tropical style bar and club, hosting international artists and a magical view of Mount Etna. The Caribbean vibe and the view makes it a perfect location for a floral beach wedding!

1. Scopello, Trapani

Scopello Tonnara (a tuna fishery) is one of the most famous spots in Sicily, featured in "Ocean's Twelve" movie with George Clooney and Brad Pitt, and in Commissario Montalbano's series.

Scopello’s coastline is rocky, craggy and dramatic. Steep cliffs and sea stacks have been sculpted over millennia by the sea and the wind, while the water features a deep shade of blue, with turquoise spots. An incredible site!

2. Erice, Trapani

Much of the pleasure of a visit to Erice is in wandering the quaint medieval streets and alleys lined with sturdy ancient stone houses, and admiring the views - it is no surprise that Erice has long been inhabited, given its privileged location and the views out to sea are very far-reaching.

3. Taormina, Messina

Taormina is a hilltop town on the east coast of Sicily. It sits near Mount Etna, an active volcano with trails leading to the summit. The town is known for the Teatro Antico di Taormina, an ancient Greco-Roman theater still used today. Near the theater, cliffs drop to the sea forming coves with sandy beaches. A narrow stretch of sand connects to Isola Bella, a tiny island and nature reserve.

4. Ortigia, Siracusa

Ortygia is a small island which is the historical centre of the city of Syracuse, Sicily. The island, also known as the Città Vecchia, contains many historical landmarks. The name originates from the ancient Greek ortyx, which means "Quail".

5. Etna, Catania

Mount Etna is the tallest volcano in Europe and offers some incredible landscapes, made of dark sand and lush forests, not to mention the breathtaking views of the coast of Catania!

What Documents do you need to get married in Italy?

Depending on whether you decide to do a religious ceremony or a civil union, you need different documents.

In general, you always need:

-The Nulla Osta from the Consulate stating that there are no impediments to you getting married

-Valid passports for both partners

-Birth Certificate for both partners

When's the best season to get married in Sicily?

Summer

Summer time in Sicily offers you bright blue skies, beautiful colors and lots of sunshine. If you are planning a summer wedding in Sicily, I recommend to choose a venue along the coast to get gentle cooling breezes from the ocean.

You can also choose to get married in the early evening, when temperatures start to slowly drop down. An outdoor venue with lots of trees that provide shadow might also be a good option for your wedding.

Winter

Winter months in Sicily are usually not that busy with local weddings. That’s why you can save up to 30% of your budget.

Sicily has some chilly weeks on mid-January to February, but overall, the winter months are relatively warm and sunny with temperatures up to 20° C.

If you are looking for unique wedding photos, then the citrus season with colorful lemons, mandarins and oranges might be just what you are looking for.

Spring & Autumn

The weather in Sicily is still delightful during spring and autumn. After the summer heat you are still able to take a dip in the Mediterranean, sometimes even until November.

In early spring you can enjoy the blooming flowers, lush green fields and bursting nature. This season is perfect for an Italian countryside ceremony.

Come ho organizzato il matrimonio di Germano & Roberta?

Per loro ho organizzato il matrimonio a 360° trovando la location adatta per il loro matrimonio in stile Siciliano. Ho organizzato l'auto ( una lapa classica ) i vestiti e gli abbellimenti floreali

Sposi in alta uniforme sulla “lapa“ nel catanese.

Germano & Roberta hanno scelto di sposarsi in Sicilia, a Catania. Hanno deciso di ricevere il picchetto d'onore e Germano ha indossato l'alta uniforme. Ho preparato per loro un'uscita in classica "lapa" Siciliana e un giro romantico in una barca di pescatori.

L'originalità made in Sicily rallegra le nozze di Germano e Roberta.

Lo sposo ha deciso di sposarsi in alta uniforme e di ricevere il picchetto d’onore che consente agli sposi di passare sotto il ponte di sciabole.

Cos'è "il picchetto d'onore"?

Il picchetto d'onore si da agli sposi che fanno parte di un corpo militare. All'uscita dalla chiesa, I componenti sollevano la sciabola formando un ponte sotto il quale passa lo coppia. Questo momento è fortemente simbolico perché rappresenta la transizione dei due sposi dalla vita single alla vita comune.

Il primo e l'ultimo componente del picchetto impediscono con una sciabola l'uscita alla coppia.

Per liberarsi, gli sposi dovranno darsi un bacio.

Roberta e Germano hanno poi deciso di viaggiare a bordo di una “lapa” (un'Ape Piaggio) in perfetto stile siciliano, lasciando stupiti e rallegrati gli ospiti.

Gli sposi sono poi andati a fare un giro in barca a remi per condividere un momento privato in un posto meraviglioso.

Vi mettono voglia di ballare, cantare e divertirvi tantissimo, accompagnati da Jhonny che è uno showman molto coinvolgente.

Un pò di background: la Jhonnys Family Project nasce nel 2008, dall'iniziativa di tre fratelli senegalesi: Jhonnys, Mara e Abib.
